It is a Christian virtue to offer one’s own suffering for others. While recovering from medical treatment, Pope Francis continues to feel the global issues that affect us all, embracing and taking on the suffering of humanity as his own. He has confronted, addressed and promoted these concrete issues, fostering a pastoral spirit that benefits humanity, even in the face of criticism from world leaders and some Church officials.

The purification of the Church

The sex abuse scandal severely damaged the Church. Pope Francis calls it «a terrible scourge on the Church» and has focused his reform on addressing the abuse of minors and vulnerable people. He has said clearly, «The failure to act adequately to stop this evil and to assist its victims has stained our witness to God’s love» (Pope Francis, Address to the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, 2023).

He has dialogued with victims of clerical sexual abuse: «The pain of the victims and their families is also our pain, and so it is urgent that we reaffirm once again our commitment to ensure the protection of minors and vulnerable adults» ([Pope Francis’ Letter to the People of God on Sexual Abuse, 2018].

The Pope calls on Church leaders to become actively involved in the protection of minors and vulnerable persons within ecclesial spaces, as well as in the provision of justice and reparation for victims and survivors. He insists that «so that [los crímenes de abuso sexual], in all its forms, may never happen again, a continuous and profound conversion of heart is necessary, manifested by concrete and effective actions involving everyone in the Church…».

Concern for migrants

Pope Francis has demonstrated a deep commitment to the protection of migrants, from those fleeing conflict to those facing deportation. He highlights their intrinsic dignity: «Migrants are not seen as having the right to participate in the life of society like others, and it is forgotten that they possess the same intrinsic dignity as anyone else»(Fratelli Tutti, 39).

While many adopt discriminatory narratives about migrants, the Pope defends their cause. He recently condemned mass deportations and threats against undocumented migrants in the United States, aligning himself with the U.S. bishops’ support for these people. In his pastoral statement, he urged:

«I exhort all the faithful of the Catholic Church and all people of good will not to give in to narratives that discriminate against and cause unnecessary suffering to our migrant and refugee brothers and sisters. With charity and clarity, we are all called to live in solidarity and fraternity, to build bridges that bring us ever closer together, avoiding walls of ignominy…» (Letter of Pope Francis to the Bishops of the United States, February 10, 2025).

Persistent call for a just peace to end global wars

Pope Francis insists that peace is the only solution to global conflicts. He advocates for a true peace, a just peace based on the eradication of the root causes of conflict, such as poverty, capitalist greed and government corruption.

He has been clear and direct in calling for an end to the wars between Ukraine and Russia, between Israel and Hamas, as well as conflicts in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. He demands that countries and institutions stop supplying weapons of war, thus avoiding catastrophic suffering for those affected.

He speaks on behalf of those who suffer the effects of war and conflict, declaring that any war is an evil:

«Every war leaves our world worse than it was before. War is a failure of politics and of humanity, a shameful capitulation, a painful defeat before the forces of evil» (Fratelli Tutti, 261).

Ecology from the heart

Pope Francis has urged everyone to «listen to the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor,» showing compassion both for the damaged planet and for those who suffer injustice. In his encyclical Laudato Si’, he stressed the urgent need to address the global environmental crisis, describing it as the Church’s «ecological dream.»

It inspires movements and activists to engage more courageously in the protection of nature and people, emphasizing that:

«The human environment and the natural environment deteriorate together; we cannot adequately address environmental degradation if we do not attend to causes related to human and social degradation…the deterioration of the environment and society affects the most vulnerable people on the planet…» (Laudato Si’, 48).

Transformative policy

Pope Francis criticizes political polarization as one of the causes of social inequality, which leads to more suffering due to government mismanagement. He calls on political leaders to embrace service to humanity and insists on the need for «better politics.»

He explains that this policy must be based on social charity:

«This political charity is born of a social conscience that transcends any individualistic mentality: ‘Social charity makes us love the common good’, it makes us effectively seek the good of all people, considered not only as individuals, but also in their social dimension» (Fratelli Tutti, 182).

Involving the grassroots Churches

The Pope places great hope in the grassroots churches. By appointing cardinals with pastoral experience in the peripheries, he has humanized the College of Cardinals, historically dominated by Italians in the Vatican.

These dedicated pastors from the Global South and impoverished countries include figures such as Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David of the Philippines, who championed the victims of the drug war in the Duterte regime, and Cardinal Fabio Baggio, a Scalabrinian priest committed to the cause of migrants. These elections amplify the voices of the peripheries within the universal Church.

Common solidarity and ecumenical dialogue

Pope Francis promotes a unique ecumenical approach, developing better methodologies to foster «real dialogue». His encyclicals and letters transcend the boundaries of the Catholic Church. He emphasizes that:

«When Christians grow in service to God and neighbor, they also grow in mutual understanding.»

Our inspiration

While recovering from medical treatment, Pope Francis continues to inspire us to live in solidarity with those most in need. His prophetic commitment has a profound impact on all of us.

He is dedicated to the purification of the Church, emphasizing protection and justice for victims of sexual abuse. It defends the rights of migrants, condemning deportations and calling for fraternity. It demands a just peace to end wars by addressing their root causes. Stresses ecological responsibility and the need for concrete actions. It promotes a transformative policy based on social charity. It gives voice to the grassroots churches and encourages ecumenical dialogue.

Despite health challenges, Pope Francis remains a beacon of hope and compassion to the world.
