It was Thursday afternoon, around Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, five Augustinian Recollects posted an announcement that on that spot there will be the construction in the future of a Church and the third recollect community of the country.
They themselves had painted the announcement. In fact, they had to repair it in the place itself because one of the posts has been broken on their way from Kamabai. And they themselves had also to do the work, digging the land, mixing cement and putting up the billboard. The passersby, with the exception of some persons of the place, were surprised at first but turned out later on to be accommodating and helpful.
The acquired area has an extension of almost two hectares and a half and is situated in the Baw Baw village, near a place called River 2, not far from Freetown and near the sea. It is situated in a zone which is in urbanization phase that is connected with the capital by a highway which the Government is developing.
Once established, this will be the third house of the Augustinian recollects together with the community in Kamabai and Kamalo, established in 2004 and 2007 respectively. These two communities are situated in the northern Province, far from the capital, thus the future house in Freetown is of great strategic importance.
