INTRODUCTION
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
My God, come to my aid.
Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, now and forever,
forever and ever. Amen.
JOYFUL MYSTERIES
Monday and Saturday prayers
In each mystery an Our Father is recited at the beginning, then ten Hail Marys and at the end the Gloria.
1. The Annunciation of the Angel to Mary.
“As the flesh of Mary was true, so was true the flesh of Christ which he took from her” (s. 362:13).
2. Mary’s visitation to her cousin St. Elizabeth.
“Mary undoubtedly did the will of the Father; therefore, it is more important for Mary to be a disciple of Christ than to have been the mother of Christ. She is happier to have been a disciple of Christ than to have been his mother.” (s. 72A, 7).
3. The birth of Jesus.
“What Mary merited to have in the flesh, the Church preserved in the spirit; but with one difference: Mary gave birth to one; the Church gives birth to many, who are to be gathered into unity by that one” (s. 195, 2).
4. The presentation of Jesus in the Temple.
“Therefore Mary was blessed, because she heard the word of God and kept it: she kept the truth in her mind better than the flesh in her bosom” (72A, 7).
5. The child Jesus lost and found in the Temple.
“Therefore, the members of Christ give birth in the mind, as Mary gave birth to Christ in the womb, without ceasing to be a virgin, and in this way you will be the mother of Christ” (s. 72A, 8).
PAINFUL MYSTERIES
Prayed on Tuesdays and Fridays
In each mystery an Our Father is recited at the beginning, then ten Hail Marys and at the end the Gloria.
1. Jesus’ prayer and agony in the garden.
“Only virginity has been able to give birth worthily to one who had no equal at birth. But this birthing of a holy virgin is the honor of all holy virgins. They too are, with Mary, mothers of Christ if they do the will of their father” (uirg. 5, 5).
2. The Flagellation of Jesus.
“He took from the Virgin Mary the mortal flesh in which to leave us an example of passion and resurrection – that of the passion to strengthen patience, that of the resurrection to awaken hope” (c. Fel. 2,11).
3. The crowning of Jesus with thorns.
“Mary, therefore, doing the will of God, is only the mother of Christ bodily, but spiritually she is also mother and sister” (uirg. 5, 5).
4. Jesus carries the cross on his shoulders.
“Since we men had closed our hearts to eternal life and could not see the Word, which the angels see, our Lord Jesus Christ opened the hearts of men with the cross” (in. Ps. 32,1,9).
5. Jesus’ death on the cross.
“Christ stretched out his hands on the cross so that we might stretch out ours in good works” (in. Ps. 62,13).
GLORIOUS MYSTERIES
Prayed on Wednesdays and Sundays
In each mystery an Our Father is recited at the beginning, then ten Hail Marys and at the end the Gloria.
1. The resurrection of Jesus.
“After these words of the angel, she, full of faith and having conceived Christ in her spirit rather than in her womb, said, Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done unto me according to thy word (s. 215:4).
2. The ascension of Jesus.
“(Mary) is certainly mother of her members, who are we, because she cooperated with her charity so that the faithful might be born in the Church, members of that Head of which she is indeed mother according to the body“(uirg. 6,6).
3. The coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles.
“We piously believe and firmly hold that Christ was born of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary” (s. 51, 10).
4. The assumption of Mary.
“The virginity that Christ intended to cherish in the heart of his Church, he anticipated it in the body of Mary” (s. 188,4).
5. The coronation of Mary.
“Holy is Mary, blessed is Mary, but better is the Church than the Virgin Mary. Why? For Mary is a portion of the Church, a holy member, an excellent member, a supereminent member, but in the end a member of the whole body” (s. 72A,7).
LUMINOUS MYSTERIES
Saturday prayers
In each mystery an Our Father is recited at the beginning, then ten Hail Marys and at the end the Gloria.
1. The baptism of Jesus.
“Baptism into Christ is but a representation of His death, and His death on the cross is but a figure of the remission of sin” (ench. 52,14).
2. The self-revelation of Jesus at the wedding feast of Cana.
“Thou hast reserved until now the good wine,” represented the person of the Lord, for Christ reserved until now the good wine, that is, His Gospel” (Io. eu. tr. 9,2).
3. The proclamation of the Kingdom of God inviting to conversion.
“The Virgin Mary was more blessed to receive the faith of Christ than to conceive the flesh of Christ” (uirg. 3:3).
4. The transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor.
“The Lord Jesus Himself shone like the sun; His garments became white as snow, and Moses and Elijah talked with Him. Jesus himself shone like the sun to signify that he is the light that enlightens every man who comes into this world. What this sun is to the eyes of the flesh, that is what he is to the eyes of the heart” (s. 78:2).
5. The institution of the Eucharist.
“Christ our Lord, who in his passion offered for us what he had taken from us at his birth (…) commanded that the sacrifice you are seeing, that of his body and blood, should be offered” (s. 228B,2).
