The Discalced Augustinian Nuns were founded by the great Archbishop of Valencia St. John de Ribera (1533-1611) He had wanted to bring to his diocese the Carmelite reform started by Mother Theresa of Avila with whom he had intense correspondence from 1571-1574. They reached no agreement and so the holy bishop took other routes to fulfill his plans for reform.
