This year, 1,500 runners participated in forty categories. There were more than 300 “dorsales 0” enlisted, who were collaborating in terms of financing a shared project. The presence of families also highlighted the sports day in homage of Father Marcelino. It was not only sports that has drawn numerous persons, but the sense of solidarity also constituted another fundamental aspect of the gathering. And the proceeds of the registration would to be used to finance a project of the Haren Alde.
The awarding of prices was graced by Miguel Ángel Hernández, prior provincial, José Torres, mayor of Granada, representatives from the council of Andalucia, the Municipal Sports Office and from different firms, as well as by some Augustinian Recollects friars: Alfredo Arce and José María Sánchez, the former and present director of Colegio Santo Tomás de Villanueva respectively. At the end of the day, the Augustinian family of Granada was again gathered in the parish of Saint Thomas of Villanova for a Eucharistic celebration and to hold a special tribute to Father Marcelino. The mass was presided by the prior provincial, animated by the RAY (Recollect Augustinian Youth) of Granada.

In the morning of April 6, 2006, Father Marcelino died. He was a “Leones” (a person from Leon, Spain) by birth, but a “Granadino” ( a person from Granada, Spain) by adoption and heart. He dedicated a good part of his life to the education of children and the youth at the Colegio Santo Tomás de Villanueva of Granada. For twenty years, he served as sports coordinator of the Colegio. He trained numerous football and basketball teams, and he likewise participated actively in the organization of sports education in the province of Granada. When he was elected Prior Provincial, he often visited various mission territories in South America, most especially, Marajó, Brazil, which he cherished in his heart.
Uniting both aspects, the “Carrera Popular Memorial Padre Marcelino” was initiated three years ago. It is a sports event, whose registration proceeds would be used to finance every year a shared project of the NGO Haren Alde in the above-mentioned zone in Brazil.
