The biography of Father Jenaro Fernandez in Spanish highlights his involvement at the Second Vatican Council

The biography of Father Jenaro Fernandez in Spanish, written by Fr. Angel Martinez Cuesta has just been released. The Italian version was published in view of the opening of the process of canonization that took place in Rome on June 13 -14 2008. The Spanish edition is more elaborate. It illustrates more Father Jenaro’s youth and formative years, and most especially, it describes in detail, the intervention of Father Jenaro at the second Vatican Council. Appendices were also added, which contain a chronology of the life of the servant of God, a list of his writings, and an index of names that will facilitate the reading and consultation of the book. The selection of pictures is also more varied.

This volume consists of two parts. The first has a general title, “Los fundamentos, 1909-1950. Familia, convento y universidad.” It studies the first forty years of Father Jenaro, during which his human, spiritual and academic personality was taking shape. The second part is more extensive and is entitled, “La plenitud, 1950-1972.” It has five chapters, which describe the last twenty-two years of his life. As the title of these five chapters indicates, – «He amado a mi Orden como a mi madre» (I have loved the Order like my mother), Al servicio de la vida consagrada (At the service of consecrated life), Perito Conciliar (Conciliar Expert-Consultant), «No quiero salvarme sin vosotros» (I do not want to be saved without you) and «¿Muerte? Yo diría vida» (Death? I would say life), his life in the Order and in the broader field of consecrated life, his attention to the sick, the poor and invalid, his involvement in the second Vatican Council and his attitude towards sorrow and death are described in this second part of the book.

The author situates Father Jenaro in his time, reflecting with numerous data the stage of the history of the Order in which Fr. Jenaro lived. He also highlights Fr. Jenaro’s self-surrender and virtues. The many literal citations reflect the profound interior life of the servant of God. They are an invitation “to love Jesus with an authentic love.”
