The Augustinian Recollects celebrate the Centenary of the Province of Saint Thomas of Villanova with an art exhibit in Granada

After a brief introduction to the media, the commemorative exhibit “Granada, Tolle Lege” officially opened. Among those present for the occasion were religious authorities of the province (prior provincial, vicar provincial, provincial councilors), civil authorities, representatives of collaborating agencies and the majority of the different working teams that organized the show.

Francisco Javier M. Martínez, exibit curator, opened the show and underscored its importance as “one of the most important of the Andalusian baroque”. He also pointed out that many of the pieces had been completely unknown till now, “since they were kept in the convent cloisters”.

The show, which gathers more than 150 works of art (sculptures and paintings) as well as a remarkable bibliographical and archivistic collection, such as some first editions of the works of Saint Augustine, is held on the occasion of the first centennial of the “Restoration of the Province of Saint Tomas of Villanova” in 1909. The Augustinian Recollects returned after the disentailment to Granada in 1899.

The exhibit at ‘Los Hospitalicos’ displays important works of Andalusian art kept by Augustinian Recollect cloistered nuns: crucifixes, Marian images, sculptures, paintings, Augustinian saints, the mysteries of the Trinity and the Eucharist, all of them motivated by the spirit of Catholic Counterreformation, executed by the great masters of the art school of Granada: Jacobo Florentino, Pablo de Rojas, Alonso de Mena, Pedro de Mena, Alonso Cano, Juan de Sevilla, Bocanegra, Jose and Diego de Mora, Risueño, Torcuato Ruiz del Peral…

The exhibit is sponsored by the Province of Saint Thomas of Villanova and the city council of Granada.
Rich artistic patrimony

In spite of the losses caused by the invasions and the disentailment, thanks to the Augustinian Recollect cloisters a rich artistic patrimony, which occupies a very significant role in the religious and cultural wealth of Granada, has been saved. The exhibit, whose curator is the Christian art historian Francisco Javier M. Martínez, is sponsored by the Province of Saint Thomas of Villanova and the city council of Granada. The great majority of the works on display have never gone outside their convents.
