Enrique Eguiarte, first Augustinian Recollect to obtain doctorate in patristic studies at the Augustinianum in Rome

In spite of its long title, the dissertation is a very original contribution to Augustinian studies, because to date there has been no systematic and complete study on the explanation of the names ofOld Testament personages and places that Saint Augustine does in his long commentary on the psalms, the work which since the 16th century has been commonly called “Enarrationes in Psalmos.

At the defense, Eguiarte explained to those present that the interpretation that Saint Augustine makes in the “Enarrationes in Psalmos”of the names of the OT personages and places is not only a rhetorical exercise, as some authors have been claiming up till now, nor were they elements invented by the Hippo bishop. When Augustine explains a Hebrew name in the “Enarrationes”, he does so from a solid exegetical theory, because for him all the elements that are found in the Bible have a particular meaning for the believer, especially in what refers to his salvation; hence, it is the duty of the shepherd of souls to investigate, study and pray in order to be able to uncover the senses and meanings that are hidden by the literal meaning in the Sacred Scriptures. On the other hand, Fr. Eguiarte discussed the sources used by Augustine to explain the names; one of the main ones was Saint Jerome, which shows that the explanation of names was not a mere invention of Augustine.

The panel that Fr. Enrique faced to defend his dissertation was composed of three great authorities in the world of patristics and Augustinian studies.
