The Augustinian Recollect nuns open a second enclosed monastery in Africa

It was an early start on Saturday 25th September for the small community of Augustinian Recollect Sisters. Little by little the priests who were going to concelebrate began arriving together with religious from other congregations in the diocese, members of the choir, pupils from the nearby school, a group of young people wearing traditional costume and many other invited guests. They were filling up the Church.

At nine o’clock sharp the ceremony of dedication and blessing of St. Augustine’s monastery began with the entrance procession. At the door of the Church Bishop Harrington welcomed everyone in English and Turkana. He then blessed the buildings and the people gathered for the occasion.

Before the Eucharist began the Mother President of the Federation of Augustinian Recollect Sisters from Mexico spoke about the Order they belonged to, about their charism and specific mission in the Church, which countries they came from and why they were in the Diocese of Lodwar.

The readings were proclaimed in English, Spanish and Turkana. After the gospel was read the Augustinian Recollect Fr. Alfredo Arambari, who is chaplain to the Mexican Federation, read the document from the Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated life and Societies of Apostolic Life, which authorised the founding of the new monastery of Augustinian Recollect Nuns in the Diocese and city of Lodwar with the following Sisters: Sor Angelina M. Pérez Durán, Sor M. Anita Ángel Avilés, Sor Ana María Martínez Mata, Sor Belén Josefina Ortiz Mondragón and Sor Maricela González Escalona”.
