Cizaurre: “Cameta suffers poverty because its natural resources are looted by many companies”

The Cameta Prelature in the oriental part of the Amazons has the main mission of proclaiming the Gospel to the indigenous, African descendants, the people who live by the river and to all who do not know Jesus. A total of 26 priests, 7 deacons, 13 religious communities and hundreds of faithful lay people active in more than 700 Christian communities.

“Like Pope Paul VI mentioned in Evangelli nuntiandi, sharing the Gospel is not only talking about Christ, it includes promoting social and economical development with the people who accept the Christian faith”, says the Augustinian Recollect bishop. In this sense, the prelature makes all the effort to support and take to action all the religious and social projects that can better life conditions for the people of the region.

Even though Brazil is becoming a great economic power itn the international market, the northeastern and Amazonian regions are advancing in a much slower pace due to its culture and geographical position.

Considering this reality, the Prelature promotes small projects that protect the natural environment and generate income for the people. Haren Alde (the Augustinian Recollects own nonprofit organization) together with Samagna, Manos Unidas, Adveniat, CEI, Kirche in Not, Popolorum progressio have all taken share in helping these projects.

Projects

Haren Alde has sponsored more than 150 children with food since 2002, thanks to donations from Spain and Rio de Janeiro. They also sponsor workshops and different health orientated courses given by a social worker, nutritionist and health agents.

Haren Alde (the Augustinian Recollects own nonprofit organization) have all taken share in helping these projects.
Caritas of Brazil also promotes denouncing sexual explotation done to children and youth. They also share awareness programs with those who are more vulnerable to this type of abuse.

The Augustinian Recollect prelate assures that the funds are minimal but everyone tries their best to make the most of them to reach the most people they can. Bishop Cizaurre still has many more projects in mind and is looking for the way to have more funding from national and international institutions to help the poor in this region.
