Augustinian Recollects move to Leyte to build community following the disaster of Typhoon Haiyan

Typhoon Haiyan left behind total devastation. Many speculating scavengers are taking advantage of the destruction and the misfortune of others to search for things that may bring them profit. The Recollects have been in the Philippines for over 400 years doing exactly the opposite: accompanying, supporting, consoling, helping.

The sensitivity proper of the Order makes us value community, be grateful for it – as it is a gift – enjoy it, and build it. And teach it too, as the principal subject, in its educational centers. It is also the personal commitment of our Prior General, who offers his ministry of teaching to our religious. And to everyone he represents and transmits the community that is the Order.

Seen in the photo is a classroom where a class is being given. A practical class, one that teaches by contact with one another and in which the professor is the one who learns the most. Family community is being built in the children who are receiving help, especially clothing and school supplies. Educational community is being built, not limited to transmitting knowledge. And also Augustinian Recollect community is being built, because community is an exercise, and giving is always the best form of receiving.
