Artists & Students create Pope Francis Mural in UNO-R of Bacolod

Members of the Dibuhista nga Naghiliugyon sa Negros (DIHON), an Artists’ Collective in the island of Negros is creating a 35-meter mural on the wall of the University of Negros Occidental – Recoletos in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental; highlighting the visit of Pope Francis in the country from January 15-19, 2015. The students of the university also participated in the mural painting.

Pope of the People

“The theme of our collective artwork is ‘Pope Francis, Pope of the People'” said Revo Yanson, the newly elected chair of DIHON. The mural speaks of the visual signature image of Pope Francis at the center; the Pope as pedicab driver, as peacemaker between the rebels and the military; as a sacada worker, doing selfie with the youth, smiling with the young people. “we are translating the words and messages of Pope Francis in the grassroots’ lives of the Filipinos – that is truly pro-poor and pro-people.” as stated in DIHON statement for the mural.  The mural includes Negros’ history & culture; higlighting the Diocese of Bacolod, as a pioneering diocese of the Church of the Poor.

Close to the hearts of the poor

“DIHON’s history is rooted in peoples’ struggle; this is our tribute to the Pope who is close to the hearts of the poor” said Jam Bayoneta, belonging to the younger generation of DIHON.

This is the only mural in the country that translates Pope Francis’ “charism” in a comical way. Any ordinary passerby appreciates the message of the mural. “With the mural, we can feel that as if Pope Francis is here in Bacolod,” said Marvin Blanco.

The participating DIHON artists are: Revo Yanson, Jolen Resuma, Jam Bayoneta, Karlo Burdeos, Larry Guillema, Stephen Basoy, Rodel Rojo, Larry Occeña, Zardo Saballa, Brother Tagoy, Jude & Agustin Jakosalem.
