He will be auxiliary bishop of the diocese of San Juan de Cuyo and titular bishop of Vita. He is argentinean, 53 years old, and he was until now Vicar of the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova in Spain.
Pope Francisco has named the Augustinian Recollect Carlos María Domínguez Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of San Juan de Cuyo (Argentina) and titular Bishop of Vita. The Holy See has made the appointment public this Monday in its daily press release.
Carlos María Domínguez thus becomes the twentieth Augustinian Recollect bishop in the world. Until now he was the Vicar of the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova in Spain.
He was born on December 23, 1965 in San Martín (Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina). In 1972 he began his studies at the Colegio Agustiniano (San Andrés, Buenos Aires), where he met the Augustinian Recollects. Years later, having made his novitiate in Burgos (Spain), he made his simple profession on February 1, 1987 in the parish of Ntra. Sra. de la Consolación (C. A. de Buenos Aires), where he would also make his solemn vows on March 15, 1992. On September 12 of the same year he was ordained deacon in Villa Maipú (San Martín, Bs. As.), and later presbyter on March 13, 1993, by Monsignor Domingo Castagna.
During the period of formation he obtained the degrees of Bachelor and Professor in Theology, Licentiate in Pastoral Theology and Professor of Primary Education. After finishing his initial formation at St. Ezekiel Seminary (St. Andrew, Bs. As.), he was assigned to St. Joseph’s College in Villa Maipú (St. Martin, Bs. As.), where he directed the technical school. Later he lived his experience as deacon in the Seminary San Ezequiel, as parish vicar, and from 1995 to 2003 he developed an intense work as vocation promoter in Santa Fe (Argentina). In 2003 he was named prior of the community of St. Ezekiel Seminary. Subsequently he was elected Vicar Provincial of Argentina in 2006, a position he held until 2012. In that year he was elected Vicar of the Province and named President of the Secretariat of Youth and Vocation Ministry, moving to the community of Guadalajara (Spain).
Carlos María Domínguez has been one of the main promoters of the Augustinian Recollect youth ministry through the JAR itinerary. In recent years he has been part of numerous commissions for the revitalization and restructuring of the Order, spreading the Augustinian spiritual exercises and prayer workshops with St. Augustine.
In 2015 he was elected by the Prior Provincial of the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova, a task he carried out until November 2018. He was later elected Vicar Provincial in Spain, a position he currently held.
