FORMATION
Bishop Azcona studied secondary and philosophy in San Sebastian after which he entered into the Order of Augustinian Recollects and professed on September 22, 1961, in Monachil, Granada, Spain. He studied theology in Granada. He was ordained to the priesthood in Rome on December 21, 1963. He studied Moral Theology and obtained a doctorate degree from Lateran University and the Institute of Moral Theology of the Redemptorists know as the Alfonsianum.
ASSIGMENTS
Bishop Azcona served as chaplain to the immigrant Spanish workers in Gernmany between 1966 and 1970. He became professor of Moral Theology and Spirituality in Monachil between 1971-1975. He became prior provincial of the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova and served from 1975 to 1981. He was vice-master of novices in El Desierto de la Candelaria, Colombia, in 1982 and as master of novices in Negrales, Madrid, in 1983. In the year 1984, he experienced a contemplative retreat in Urcal, Almeria. In 1985, he went to the mission of Marajó, Brazil. He was ordained bishop of the prelacy of Marajó on the 4th of May 1987.
DIOCESE
The Prelature of Marajó is part of the metropolitan see of Belén do Pará. The prelature include the island of Marajó with an extension of 181, 973 square kilometers and a population of 260,000 of which 239,000 are Catholics. The territory is divided into 9 parishes: Afua, Anajas, Bagre, Breves, Chaves, Melgado, Portel, Savatierra and Soure. The Episcopal see is located in Soure. There are 9 diocesan priests, 12 male religious and 13 sisters.
