On the 11th March 2001 Pope John Paul ll solemnly recognized as martyrs of Christ 233 Christians assassinated during the Spanish Civil War which tore asunder Spanish society from July 1936 to April 1939. The largest group came from Valencia and was very mixed. There were priests, contemplative nuns, religious and a good number of lay people. Among the contemplatives we find Mother Josefa Masiá de la Purification, a Discalced Augustinian from the Convent of Beniganim.
