St. Thomas lived in Spain, in the first half of the sixteenth century. It was a society in ferment seeking new ways in theological discourse, in the religious life, in piety and devotion, in the apostolate… Everywhere there were shouts raised against the absenteeism of the bishops, the vices of the clergy, the useless ways of theology, devotion which was too formal and the blemished life of the friars.
