From the 25th July to August 1936 seven Augustinian Recollects, headed by their Superior, and a diocesan priest, gave their lives for Christ on the streets of Motril. Since the proclamation of the Republic on the 14th April 1931 they had lived on tender hooks. On 7th March 1999, after new delays due to the difficulty of finding a free space in his busy agenda, Pope John Paul ll wrote their names in the Book of the martyrs.
