The Regional Government of Navarra shows its solidarity with an Augustinian Recollect Bishop whose life has been threatened

According to the regional newspaper “Diario de Navarra” the Parliament showed its solidarity towards the figure of Bishop Azcona for “his unselfish work in pro of the dignity of all people and against the sexual exploitation of women in Brazil”, as it also does with all around the world who “are passionate about eradicating this open sore, be they civil or religious organizations or institutions.

The Chamber took this opportunity to make a wider call to the people of Navarra to join in a show of solidarity and at the same time, to denounce any type of discrimination there might be in our community”.

The approved text also expresses a sharp condemnation of “ any corrupt practice and abuse of power that might protect the use of extortion, coercion or threat, in any corner of the world and which supposes at the same time a threat to the basic values and principles of democracy and human rights”.

Taking advantage of this moment of solidarity, the Parliament of Navarra has petitioned the Spanish Government, through it’s Foreign Office and the Consulate of Brazil in Spain “ to initiate whatever action is in their power to make sure the security of this bishop from Navarra and other compatriots who find themselves in similar circumstances due to their defense of a just cause, is guaranteed”.

Bishop José Luis Azcona’s family who gave an interview to the “Diario de Navarra” two months ago, saying the Bishop wanted to stay in his diocese in spite of the threats, received with satisfaction the news of the Government of Navarra’s support.
