It is a parchment which, after the expulsion of the Hebrews from Spain, was reused for the binding of a book, which contains the Acts of the Confraternity of Saint Catherine of the Parish of Monateagudo. The said book gathers the acts and dates pertinent to the said confraternity from 1507 to 1613. To bind the said book, the Hebrew parchment, which contains a series of texts from the book of the Prophet Jeremiah, specifically the texts: Jer. 34: 17b- 38:11a, was used.
The book of the Confraternity of Saint Catherine of the parish of Monteagudo has been conserved for some years now in the Archives of Palacio Decanal in Tudela (Navarra, Spain). The religious Enrique A. Eguiarte was able to see for the first time the book with the Hebrew parchment in the Easter of 2007. He took some annotations and he published his findings in an article of the journal Mayeutica (Mayeutica, 2009 [35], pgs. 39-49).
The finding of the parchment aroused the interest of Mercedes Terren, director of the Archive of Palacio Decanal of Tudela, who ordered the restoration of the parchment by removing it from the binding of the book of the Confraternity of Saint Catherine and spreading it out so that it could be read.
Sephardic Community
This parchment is considered to be one of the treasures of Monteagudo and a certified testimony of the multi-cultural life of medieval Spain. In August of 2009, Enrique A. Eguiarte was able to go back to Tudela to examine the parchment already removed from the binding of the book and to write an extensive article about it, showing its characteristics and translation. The finding aroused the interest of Mariano Herrero, mayor of Monteagudo, who contacted the director of the journal Avgvstinvs and because of the importance of the said discovery, decided to have a small book published that would contain the details of the findings and of the parchment, the texts, the characteristics of the Jewish community of Monteagudo and some photos of the said parchment, as a gift to the residents of this locality.
In dealing with one of the few Sephardic biblical documents known in Ribera de Navarra, by extension and its perfect state of conservation, this parchment is considered to be one of the treasures of Monteagudo and a certified testimony of the multi-cultural life of medieval Spain.
