A XVII-Century Presepio shown to the public for the first time by Augustinian Recollect Nuns in Madrid

According to Europa Press Agency, this work of art done in 1645 was a gift of the VI Count of Monterrey, Manuel Zuniga y Fonseca, who was then ambassador to Rome and later the viceroy of Naples, to the Augustinian Recollect nuns. His daughter Ines happened to be a professed member of the convent of the Purisima, in Salamanca.

The work portrays the daily life of Jesus at the home in Nazareth. One can contemplate the figures of Jesus, Mary and Joseph together with the Kings, shepherds, and angels singing. The pieces are well sculpted and are dressed according to their times, their clothings were decorated with threads of silver and gold.

In addition to the Belen and as part of its 4th centenary celebration, three of the tapestry collection called, “The Acts of the Apostles”, were also displayed. Ever since the time of its foundation the wall carpets were kept in the cloister for use during specific liturgical ceremonies within the paschal season when the book of the Acts of the Apostles plays the principal role. These tapestries were woven in the XVII century in the shop of Jan Raes and Jacob Geubles II, in Brussels (Begium), according to the drawing of Rafael Sanzio. They were probably commissioned by the archdukes, Alberto and Isabel Clara Eugenia. Clara was a very close friend of the sisters in the convent of La Encarnacion. Due to the expropriation of Mendizabal (1835), they were deposited in the Palacio Real de Madrid and were never returned to the Monastery since then.
