Habemus Papam: the Church welcomes the new successor of Peter with joy

The Order of Augustinian Recollects joins in the joy of the universal Church and assures its prayers for the new Pope, guide of the people of God.

Rome has once again spoken the language of the Spirit. From the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, the white smoke has announced to the world news that fills millions of hearts with hope: Habemus Papam. We have a Pope.

The election of a new successor of Peter is always a moment of grace for the Church. A new pastor has been called by God to confirm his brothers and sisters in the faith and to guide the People of God in times of hope and challenges.

From the very first moment, the Augustinian Recollects – spread in more than 20 countries – have united in prayer for the new Pontiff. “We already pray for you”, as expressed in the message accompanying the image of the white smoke, the visible sign of the election. We pray for your ministry, for your wisdom, for your fidelity to the Gospel, and that the Lord will strengthen you in your service to the Church and the world.

In communion with the entire Augustinian Recollect family – religious, sisters and laity – we gratefully welcome the new Pope and renew our availability to serve the Church wherever it is most needed. As St. Augustine taught us, “with you I am a Christian, for you I am a bishop”. Today, these words resonate strongly in the one who has said yes to God’s call from the Chair of Peter.

Welcome, Holy Father! We walk with you.
