Jn. 18:1-19,42: Homily of Saint Augustine (Commentaries on the Gospel of John 117, 3)

“Well then, he says, they took Jesus, who, carrying the cross himself, set out for the place called Calvary, in Hebrew Golgotha, where they crucified Him. Jesus was on his way towards the place where He was to be crucified, while carrying his cross. What a grand spectacle! If contemplated upon by impiety, it was a great mockery, if by piety, it was a great mystery. If conemplated upon by impiety, it was a great example of disgrace, if by piety, it was a great bulwark of faith. If contemplated upon by impiety, it laughs at a king, carrying with him the tree of punishment rather than the scepter of his kingdom; if by piety, it sees a king carrying the tree of his crucifixion, which He would affix even on the forehead of kings. It was disdainful for the eyes of the impious, but in it, the hearts of the saints will find glory. In fact, Paul would have to say: May I not glory, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Gal. 6:14) He was exalting the cross by carrying it on his shoulder, and he was carrying the candelabrum for the lamp that was yet to burn, and not to be placed under the bushel basket.(cf. Mt. 5: 15)

Thus, while carrying his cross, He set out for the place called “Calvary,” in Hebrew Golgotha, where they crucified Him, with two others, one on each side, while He was at the middle. As we have learned from the narration of the other evangelists, these two were brigands with whom He was crucified, and in between them, Jesus was fixed, as the prophecy says: He was numbered among the criminals. (Is. 53:12)
